The first course in this new series of fashion-themed events, will explore the relationship between fashion and art, with a special focus on the theoretical and practical challenges of curating fashion exhibitions in the context of an art institution.

Jo Ellison (Fashion Editor, Financial Times) will host the conversatin. Ellison will consider the different forms curating takes in the fashion industry, with reference to recent hit exhibitions such as Balenciaga, Rei Kawakubo, 'House Style' and 'The Vulgar' as well as historic exhibitions such as the 1983's Yves Saint Laurent exhibition.

Curator and exhibition-maker Judith Clark will talk about the challenges of depicting fashion and designer’s legacies in museums, whilst designer Katharine Hamnett, will offer a designer’s perspective on the subject. As the holder of a much-sought after and referenced archive, and with over 30 years in the profession, she has curated her collections to reflect her political and environmental concerns, as well as for the catwalk. Milliner Stephen Jones will discuss his involvement in exhibitions in the past years, including ‘Hats: An Anthology’ at the Victoria & Albert Museum, ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ at the Costume Institute, ‘Seventy Years of Haute Couture’ at NGV Melbourne, ‘The Vulgar’ and ‘Christian Dior Couturier du Rêve’.

Judith Clark is a curator and exhibition-maker based in London. She is currently Professor of Fashion and Museology at London College of Fashion, UAL, where she teaches on the MA Fashion Curation. Since setting up her gallery in 1997, Clark has curated 40 exhibitions of dress.

Katharine Hamnett has worked for over 30 years as a designer, and just last year relaunched her label. Her work has regularly featured in exhibitions. 

Stephen Jones OBE is a London-based milliner who opened his first millinary salon in 1980. He has worked with celebrities and royalty - from Boy George, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Mick Jagger to Diana Princess of Wales. He has collaborated with fashion industry greats including Vivienne Westwood, Rei Kawakubo and John Galliano. In 2009, he curated the popular exhibition ‘Hats: An Anthology’ at the V&A.
